Weather watch

Some of you might have noticed that since Boxing Day the weather watch ( Grand forks..Today’s weather) has been more accurate and I include a decimal point in the temperatures.

The reason is simple. A very good friend of ours gave us two thermometers for Christmas, both oblong shape and about the size of a Palm Pilot. One of them is the base station thermometer and gives us the indoors temperature and also the outdor temperature. This is because the second thermometer which gives the outdoors temperature, has a long wire attached and at the end of it is the thermometer probe that is outside, while the unit sits inside on a shelf.

It is a great unit. We no longer need to go outside to see what the temperature is, added to which we don’t have to look closely at the mercury level to see where it is. The reading can be in either Fahrenheit or Celcius and since I started off the weather watch in Celcius that is what we have set it to. It really is a lovely gift and gets used daily!

Deer

We see lots of deer round here. I have just been reminded how near they come when yet again three deer have just passed by my back door, just yards from it! It is dark out right now, though not yet 5-30pm. Bo allerted me as he did at midnight the other night and again at 6 am to inform me they were yet again browsing outside by the dining room window!

At night when we go out for the last walk with Bo and Jaxx we usually see a herd of deer on the back fields. They have been coming each night during November and all of December. Since we have had snow lying on the ground, when we walk in the mornings beside seeing the deer droppings all around, we can see the imprint of where the deer have been laying down sleeping.

Deer are a problem round here and most people do not enjoy seeing them on their property. I, however LOVE seeing them! They are gentle creatures and have a leisurely way of walking. They are joys to see running and jumping! I know the people who keep their horses in our paddocks don’t like them much since the deer go and eat the hay in the hay store that is there waiting to be given out to their horses! They have had to put a board over the hay to stop the deer eating it!

As far as I am concerned though, I hope the deer continue to come and use our property. (I wonder if I will say that in the Spring when I am growing seeds and plants?!)
