birth and marriage cert ordered

Posted by Moo on 27 Feb 2008 | Tagged as: family trees

I got around to ordering the birth certificate for Mary Ann Holley (born I think in 1864). I also ordered her marriage certificate to Joseph Maddock. I know who her father is as I have seen the parish records on line for Creech St Michael. However the records there do not show how old she was at her marriage so I am hoping the marriage certificate will tell me and not just say “full age”!
I am hoping that these two documents will fill in the missing data for her and enable me to find her parents.

Family trees and documents.

I ordered 9 marriage certificates the other day and this Thursday 7 arrived, and on Friday the last 2 arrived.
It was good to see that a lot of my evidence tallied.
However I came across some confusing evidence. I have one person who was deceased at his daughter’s marriage but the certificate showed his occupation and didn’t mention he was deceased. Also by this time one census showed his wife widowed and then the next census date she was remarried.
Again on another marriage certificate another person’s occupation was given but my evidence had shown him deceased.
I might have thought this was normal but on yet another marriage certificate it showed the person’s occupation but that he was now deceased.
On the evidence of two marriage certificates I found I had the wrong parents in both cases. So I had to delete the siblings and parents from the tree.
On another person I find I need to get a copy of her birth certificate to ascertain I have the right parents. The IGI shows a Mary Ann Holley christened 02 Sept 1866 Burlescombe Devon Parents James Holley and Elizabeth. ALSO IGI shows Mary Ann Holley christened 07 Feb 1864 Burlescombe Parents James Holley and Mary. The three censuses here shows birth about 1865, about 1865 and about 1866. The death registered in Taunton says Mary Ann Maddock 46 years old, which makes her birth 1864 and her parents James and Mary (which is what I think is correct but I now need to verify it by gettign her birth certificate.)

Almost didn’t exercise!

It’s saturday again. I have been exercising for many weeks. I thought it had become automatic. BUT oh no! I kept going through my mind this morning with all sorts of reasons why I didn’t have to exercise… I deserved a day off! One day wouldn’t matter! I was aching! I need to rest!
Eventually I went and did it. The deciding factor was a buddy who reports in daily to me when she exercises and I do the same to her. If she hadn’t already exercised and put me to shame, then I might not have gone.
It was hard, hard going today.. and slow! But I have exercised so I can feel good about myself for the rest of the day!

Many weeks of exercise!

I am feeling very pleased with myself as it is over six weeks of exercise now and not a day missed! I haven’t taken a tape measure to myself since the last disastrous occassion. However I FEEL a bit slimmer, though I realise I have a long way yet to go.
5 weeks of cycling 15 kilometers a day is equal to 105 kims a week times 5 weeks which is equal to 525 kilometers! Oh my! I have cycled from Grand Forks to Vancouver (minus those great big mountain passes!!!! because I have done it all on the flat!)
Or 9 miles a day for 5 weeks is equal to 63 miles a week times 5 weeks which is equal to 315 miles! (I hope my maths is correct!) It sounds good anyway! ..that’s from New Milton, Hampshire to Taunton, Somerset at least three times (again on the flat! )

five weeks!

It is now five weeks since I started my exercise regime and I am pleased to say I have not missed one day. I still cannot say it is any easier except on the mental front where I now no longer debate whether to exercise or not.. I just go and do it.
I also cannot say if I have lost any weight as I refused to step on the scales in the early days. I did step on them the other day and all I can say is I am far too heavy!! I must have put on at LEAST ten pounds over the Christmas period and goodness knows how much leading up to Christmas!
I got my tape measure out the other day too. Not measurements I wish to share with anyone! Just toooooo many inches!
However I do FEEL better for the exercise, so will continue to keep it up. I think maybe the inches will fall away millimeter by millimeter and I assure myself that muscles weigh heavier than fat! If I have this fact wrong, please don’t disillusion me!!!

Harry Potter books

My elder daughter gave me the first four books in the Harry Potter series for Christmas. Since I was already in the middle of a victorian saga I waited until I finished that book before starting the Harry potter series.
I had an inkling that once I started reading them I would not want to put them down. I was right!
I started the first book earlier in the week and I have already finished reading book three.
Although I have already seen the movies, the books are far better (as usual!) and very gripping.
You don’t have to be a child to enjoy this series!

not getting any easier!

I have been exercising now for over three weeks and I THOUGHT it would get easier as my body got used to exercising! However I was wrong! It seems no easier now than in the first few days! The only difference I can think of is: I don’t ache as much as I did the first few days! And now my mind seems to accept that I have to exercise each day… I no longer debate in my head “should I exercise or should I give it a miss today”.
I look forward to the time when it is EASY to cycle fifteen kilometers!
